50/50 Concept

The 50/50 concept has been used clinically by Dr Michelle Curran for many years. It was initially used to gain an awareness in families and in the community, of the need to not require individuals to shift their whole way of being, to meet the requirements of society.

It is about those who are neurotypical, meeting individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder halfway, in understanding, acceptance, and expectations and the inverse of this.

Over time there is increased awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

• Time frame for how this awareness has translated into improved diagnosis.
• The world is set up to suit neurotypical individuals.
• Increasingly those who have been diagnosed are realising the option to not live in the neurotypical world.
• Though when they are required to engage in the neurotypical world is where the 50/50 concept is beneficial.
